TEAM BANQUET

Below is the form for signing up - or declining - a seat at this years club banquet.  Please use the attached form (it will print out much nicer than the e-mail) and respond one way or the other to Maureen Krouse no later than Friday, February 29, 2008.

We will be returning to Springfield Country Club - the site of last year's banquet - on Sunday, March 9, 2008.  We are slated to kick things off at 1:00 PM and bring things to a close by 4:00 PM.

Congratulations to all the LMAC swimmers who competed in the League Championships last Sunday.

It's quite an accomplishment to even swim at the meet (only the fastest 18 swimmers qualify for each event and there are hundreds of children in each age group in the league) and our children swam spectacularly. Special recognition goes to our two league champions: Maddie McComb and Cassandra Reed. Follow this link http://www.suburbanaquatic.org/ then click on Championship Meets, then click either Boys Results or Girls Results for the Mike Kennedy Memorial Championship to see all of the results.

Combined with our teams' strong performances at Division Champs early in February, we're excited about next season. Please remember to sign up for the banquet on March 9th where coaches, swimmers and parents can celebrate the past season and look forward to 2008/2009.

As many of you already know, an issue arose this week between the Ardmore YMCA, which is the manager of Lower Merion High School's pool and administrator of the LMAC swim programs, and Coach McShane over a coaching issue. Although the Y took steps to end their relationship with Coach McShane, the LMAC Advisory Board has unanimously voted to support Coach McShane. LMAC will continue on as a swim program, culminating in the League Championship Meets this Sunday. We are proud of the swimmers who qualified, and wish them and our coaches well.

We apologize for the confusion caused by Y's action which it took without notice or consultation with the LMAC Advisory Board. We also regret that the Y elected to cancel practice and failed to properly communicate with the Board, denying us of the opportunity to communicate with our swimmers or their parents. This, in turn, led to confusion among the entire club.

We look forward to seeing you all at the Banquet on March 9th. We'll celebrate the past season and have information about where we'll be swimming next year while the new Lower Merion High School is under construction.

League Championships

Boys Session

SAL Championships for Boys is slated for Sunday morning, February 10, at LaSalle University.  Warm-ups for Lower Merion are from 7:45 AM to 8:00 AM in lane 6 (doors open at 7:30 AM).  Please arrive early to allow time to park and to walk to the natatorium.  The meet is slated to start promptly at 9:00 AM.

Girls Session

LaSalle University will also be the site of the SAL Girls Championships which will take place Sunday afternoon, February 10.  The meet will begin sharply at 2:00 PM.  LMAC will warm-up in lanes 5 and 6 from 1:15 PM to 1:30 PM.  Odds are good that parking will be tight as the Boys session will just be letting out when the Girls will be arriving.  Please plan accordingly.

GO LMAC!

There is no practice tonight, Thursday, February 7, 2008. The YMCA has closed the pool this evening; more information will follow.

Just a quick reminder that the culminating event of the year (our banquet) is scheduled for March 9.  The announcement and the accompany form went out earlier this week and we've already received responses.  Keep'em coming (cause it will save me from having to write further reminders...).

Coach McShane has asked that we remind swimmers about League Championships ('A' Championships) this Sunday, February 10,2008.

League Championships

League Championships are scheduled for Sunday, February 10 at LaSalle University.  League Championships consist of the League's top eighteen swimmers in each event for all age groups.  However, if one of the swimmers in the top eighteen is unable to participate in the meet, then lower seeded swimmers may move up.  If this is the case, these swimmers would not be swimming in Division Champs.  Swimmers may participate in both Division and League Champs for a total of four events.  However, the same event can not be swum at both Championships.  The seeding meeting for League Championships is Monday, January 28.  Swimmers on the cusp of participating should speak to Coach McShane on Tuesday regarding their participation.  As soon as a list is available thereafter, it will be posted/circulated.  Considering how confusing sorting out these meets can be, please don't hesitate to call me at home in the evening to discuss/explain, as any further explanation is not an e-mail conversation.  For a listing of the top fifty swimmers in each event as of this moment (The Last Chance Meet is this weekend, which could change things), please go to Top 50 Lists at http://www.suburbanaquatic.org/.

From the Coach

As some of you know, we've had a few situations this season in which swimmers have missed their event/heat or swum in the wrong event/heat.  Working with the LMAC Parents Association Leadership Group and the 15 and Older Age Group swimmers we have made some significant strides in improving upon this challenge.  Now, to complete this process, we need your help as the parents of the swimmers.

In short, we need you to make sure your swimmers remain on the pool deck throughout the entire meet.  We recognize - especially for the younger swimmers - that the meet may seem long. As a result, it is not usual for them to seek you out in the stands or hallways.  While this may seem innocent enough, it actually has the potential to affect the outcome of the meet.  Swimmers need to be available several events before their actual event to ensure that they are present and swim in the correct event, heat, and lane. Even if they aren't scheduled to swim immediately, they need to be readily available for substitution due to a change in strategy, the illness of another swimmer. etc.  This also means staying in one's suit until the very end of the meet;just in case he/she is needed in a relay (not only for his/her own age group, but swimmers can always be called upon to swim up [i.e. swim in another age group's relay] if it will benefit the team).

If your swimmer tends to get thirsty or needs a snack during a meet, please have them pack their bag - prior to the meet - with the appropriate item(s) (e.g. water, Gatorade, orange, etc.).  If this nourishment is right there with him/her on the deck, then there is one less reason for him/her to leave the area at an inappropriate time or prematurely.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.  Your son/daughter will appreciate your efforts.

Regards,

Coach McShane

We have gotten some e-mails regarding the obtaining of times from a given swim meet.  As parents are not allowed on deck and only a select few folk are permitted to approach the table (league rules), the simplest way to obtain times is to go to the SAL web-site (http://www.suburbanaquatic.org/).  Once there, go to the Meet Results link and scroll down to meet's date and click on meet of choice (for dual meets we're noted as LMAC).  Results are usually posted by the Monday after the meet if not that Sunday.  Please note that this past Saturday's meet for the Girls was swum in a metered pool; so times will probably not compare well to a yardage pool.  However, the League will convert these times (yes there is a formula, but please don't ask me what it is) when they go to post the Top Fifty times beginning - probably - sometime in late December/early January.

Meet Basics Reminder

Swimmers unable to participate in this Saturday's meet should notify Head Blake McShane no later than tonight (Tuesday, November 13th).  Unscheduled absences after this time must be phoned in to the respective Team Representative.  For the Girls Team the Team Representative is Lisa Ford.  Lisa's home phone number is 610,624.0613.  She is also available via cell phone at 610.608.2890.  The Team Representatives for the Boys Team are Francie McComb and Kathy Kerns-Phillips.  Francie may be reached at home (610.771.0786).  Kathy may be reached at 610.649.0861 (home) or 610.202.2988 (cell).

Swimmers needing a ride home on the bus must notify - in writing - their Team Representatives Francie McComb (franciemccomb@comcast.net) or Kathy Kerns-Phillips (kmk817@aol.com) by Thursday evening, November 15th.  Swimmers without a note will not be permitted to ride the bus home.

All Parents Off Deck

Unless a parent is functioning in an assigned volunteer capacity, he/she may not be on the deck at any time before, during, or after the meet; regardless of location (i.e. home or away).

The LMAC Parents Association Leadership Group, along with our coaches, can not overemphasize the need for families to notify our head Coach, Blake McShane - in a timely fashion - regarding their child's(ren's) absence from an upcoming meet.  Unfortunately, despite the request made by Coach at the pre-season Parents Meeting to notify him a week before a given meet, several families were providing notification the Thursday and Friday immediately preceding this past Saturday's meet.

For families not familiar with how a line-up for a swim meet is developed, it is not a simple task; especially for the more competitive meets. Generally speaking, you are talking about several hours of work to strategically slot swimmers to enable the team to get the most points, while still allowing for the greatest number of swimmers to participate.  Adjusting for last minute call-outs, is not simply a matter of "slipping in" another swimmer.  Most "slipping in" has a multiple domino effect which represents that much more time and effort on the part of our coaching staff.  Such changes on the day of a meet take coaching time away from those children who are present as the coach must go to the table to make the appropriate adjustments.

Effective immediately, families of swimmers must notify Coach McShane directly as to their lack of participation in an upcoming meet.  This notification may take place in person, via e-mail (titaniccontrols@rcn.com), or by phone (610.520.9389).  This notification must take place no later than the Tuesday before a weekend event (e.g. Saturday dual meet).  Swimmers of families who do not provide such timely notification will probably not participate in as many events at the next scheduled meet as they might have otherwise.
